Essaouira – Bride of the Atlantic
The beautiful and mysterious city of Essaouira is located on Morocco’s Atlantic coast, around two hours away from Marrakesh. The old town – or medina – with its jumble of streets, and the historic port have retained their historic character, as the spectacle of everyday Arab life has changed little over time. Essaouira, also known as the pearl of the Atlantic, has a population of around 85,000 and is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco – and one of the most mysterious.

Esprit Nouveau and Hipster Vibe
Modern art galleries, traditional artisans and the hustle and bustle of the waterside promenades and in the central Moulay el Hassan square – as well as offering a perfect destination for discerning individualists, Essaouira also offers an ideal backdrop for artists. This is where Orson Welles filmed his masterpiece Othello in the 1950s. He was followed by musicians, including Bob Marley, Jim Morrison, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix, who – it is said – wrote Castles Made of Sand in this fascinating city. Although we can’t verify this rumour, we know for a fact that Essaouira has an exceptional charm and continues to be a favourite hangout for a bohemian crowd, magically attracting creatives from around the world.

Culture and History
Essaouira’s Medina has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001.
